Past Inductee Profile - Bill Sexsmith

Bill Sexsmith is one of western Canada’s most prominent grocery industry figures, spending a total of 41 years in the food industry. While most of the time was spent at Canada Safeway, he had a front row seat during the heady days of Sobeys’ acquisition of Canada Safeway, spending his final three years before retirement within the Sobeys team post acquisition.

Sexsmith began his career in St Albert, Alberta, and later worked in Calgary, beginning as a part time clerk and working his way through the ranks. His talent was quickly noticed, and he spent four years at the Safeway Corporate Headquarters in Pleasanton, California. Of his 41 years, 20 were spent at the Vice President or Senior Vice President level.

“Canada Safeway was very community oriented”, says Sexsmith, “so becoming involved in various charities was very natural through the day to day workings within the company. My position allowed for involvement with, and support of various charitable organizations. The Canada Safeway Foundation was the conduit for supporting a broad range of causes throughout the broad geography of our business.”

Sexsmith was honoured with the Santa Cause award in 2004.

His charity of choice was the Alberta Children’s Hospital. This was due, he says “to my strong conviction about the work this facility does in our communities. Children oriented causes are very important to me.”

These days, Sexsmith spends time travelling and continues pursuing charitable causes and resides in Kelowna, BC.
